Overview

Verefi Technologies™, Inc. was founded in 2002 by Dr. Randy Haluck of Penn State University College of Medicine and Dr. Roger Webster of Millersville University to develop technological solutions for surgical simulation and "simulators that work." We develop software and hardware products for training of healthcare personnel worldwide in key medical and surgical skills. These products are commonly referred to a surgical simulators or Virtual Reality trainers.

Initial capitalization of the company came from personal assets, a Life Sciences Greenhouse of Pennsylvania grant, product license revenue, and Department of Defense SBIR. Our products are an intellectual property package licensed from Penn State University. Current operations are headquartered at 246 S. Market Street, Elizabethtown, PA, the company's first location outside of the Life Sciences Greenhouse. In addition to the founders, the Verefi team includes CEO Dr. Carol L. Lake, Software Engineer Rod Shenk, and Special Assistant to the President Cindy Miller.

The company's first product, EndoTower™, was launched in 2003. Camera driving is the most basic and essential skill for all minimally invasive laparoscopic and endoscopic surgical operations. EndoTower permits training in the "hand-eye" coordination needed for manipulation of straight and angled laparoscopes. EndoTower consists of a Verefi V-CAM mock camera, an Immersion Medical Virtual Laparoscopic Interface, a computer and display, and Verefi Technologies, Inc. EndoTower software. The EndoTower environment is an abstract virtual object (the tower) that provides a complex 3D structure for exploration with the angled camera lens. EndoTower is useful for training in General Surgery, Orthopedics, Urology, Gynecology, and more. Two additional products, called RapidFire and SmartTutor, are set for launch in October, 2005. These products run on a standard personal computer and build additional basic skills for minimally invasive surgery. Additional products are in the development pipeline and it is anticipated that a new product launch will occur approximately every six months for the next two years. A key feature of all of the company's products is that they are developed by a practicing surgeon for surgical educators to use to teach medical students, surgical residents, surgical nurses, and surgical technicians in academic medical centers and community colleges.

Research and development continue to be an essential part of the company's mission, particularly in establishing the educational validity of simulation in healthcare education and in expanding the product line beyond the general surgery market and into additional technologic approaches. A variety of potential research collaborators, primarily university-private industry, both within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as well as nationally and internationally, have been identified for future partnerships.
